• What are the application deadlines for the MS programs?

  We admit MSIE students on rolling basis. Below is the suggested deadline for full consideration with a completed application.

• My bachelor’s degree is not in engineering, can I still apply?

  Yes. The minimum requirement for admission is the baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution. Diverse acceptable bachelor’s degree can be from psychology, political science, business, mathematics, chemistry, physics, computer science, among others. Contact program director Dr. Lihui Bai for your readiness and fit with the program. In some cases, remedial work can be done in advance by taking course(s) either at UofL or at recommended community colleges.

• What are the academic prerequisites to be a successful applicant?

  Calculus I or higher

• Should I apply for the M.S. program or the Ph.D. program?

  If you are interested in ending your graduate studies with an M.S. degree, apply for MSIE program. If you are interested in working toward a PhD and do not already have an M.S. degree, you may apply for the direct PhD degree program, but only applicants with exceptional credentials are directly admitted into the Ph.D. program without an M.S. degree.

• Does the IE department offer financial aid to incoming students?

  Scholarships opportunities may exist for exceptional MSIE students contingent on funding availability for the department. If available, these limited scholarships, designed to partially offset the tuition, are determined on a semester basis. There is no guarantee for renewal in subsequent semesters. Official offer letters to individual students will contain details.

• When can I expect to learn the admission decision?

  Once a complete application is received, within two to four weeks applicants will be contacted by UofL. If you are contacted by International Center on financial aid documents, we encourage you to provide all necessary financial aid documents within 4-6 weeks. Once International Center receives requested financial aid documents, it will be approximately four to six weeks to hear from us on the final decision. We follow the best practices to provide you the final admission decision; but the process also depends on how quickly you can provide us with the financial aid documents.

• How do I apply for my visa?

  If you are an international student, you will also need to complete the Certificate of Eligibility for F-1 visa (Form I-20). U.S. universities are required by law to verify that students entering the United States on F-1 and J-1 visas have adequate financial resources to meet expenses. University of Louisville’s International Center will assist you to obtain an I-20 (international mail service is paid by applicant) in order for you to have visa interview for your F1-visa at a U.S. consulate serving you.
