Gina Bertocci

Professor

Gina Bertocci is currently Professor and Endowed Chair of Biomechanics in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Louisville. Dr. Bertocci has a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering, and a PhD in Bioengineering - all from the University of Pittsburgh. She is also a licensed Professional Engineer. Prior to joining U of L in 2004, Gina was an Associate Professor in the Rehabilitation Science and Technology Department at the University of Pittsburgh. In 2011, Gina was elected as a Fellow in the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). Her research interests include injury biomechanics, rehabilitation engineering, and orthopedic biomechanics. Her research foci include pediatric injury risk in falls, early detection of child abuse, delineation of abusive and accidental trauma in children, canine stifle (knee) biomechanics and associated surgical/orthotic interventions to stabilize the stifle following cranial cruciate deficiency, canine spinal cord injury and wheelchair transportation safety and accessibility. Gina's research has been funded by NIDRR, DOJ, NIH, CDC, the AKC Canine Health Foundation and the Paralyzed Veterans of America - Spinal Cord Research Foundation. Previously she served as the Director of the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Wheelchair Transportation Safety, and is currently an ISO Designated Expert on Wheelchair Transportation for the US. She is also a member of the RESNA/ANSI Committee on Wheelchair Transportation. Gina has published 71 peer-reviewed journal papers and 130 conference proceedings, and has 2 issued patents. She also co-founded Bearcat Innovations, LLC with a U of L colleague.
