The J.B. Speed School of Engineering has been a leader in engineering education since its founding in 1925. The Speed School is a small engineering college housed on the campus of a major metropolitan university – in a sense, the best of both worlds. With a strong tradition of experiential learning, the latest technology available, and a co-operative education experiences, students have the opportunity to make change happen.
As the first school in the nation to be accredited at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including a 5th year Master’s (MEng) by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, Speed School has been a leader in engineering education for 95 years.
An Engineering degree from Speed School is more than just a major, or even a future career path. It’s about making a real impact on the world around us. What makes a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree from the J.B. Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville so special? It starts with our Areas of Study: Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.
Each of these programs is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET.

Our first-year students start with Engineering Fundamentals, a program specifically designed to provide a strong foundation before undergraduates pursue a specialized discipline. In this program, faculty and staff take a hands-on approach to help students successfully navigate their first year. Core Engineering courses include Mathematics, introductory Engineering, and Graphics.
Our Cooperative Education program is an immersive collaboration with employers that opens doors beyond graduation. From your second year until you complete your undergraduate degree, you’ll spend three semesters gaining real-world, on-the-job experience. And it’s paid. Many students accept full-time job offers from their Co-Op employers.
