LARRI Overview

LARRI, Louisville Automation and Robotics Research Institute, is JB Speed School’s newest institute and the first robotics institute in the state of Kentucky. Our research is focused on a variety of topics related to Robotics and Automation such as Human-Robot Collaboration, Networked Robots, Autonomous Vehicles, Micro and Nano Robotics, just to name a few.

The diverse research we do requires a multi-disciplinary team to achieve nationally competitive goals and standards we set for our Institute. LARRI is a team of faculty, staff and students with expertise in a variety of engineering fields related to automation and robotics, in close collaboration with faculty from other UofL Schools and Colleges such as Nursing, Medicine, Arts and Sciences and Business. The transdisciplinary nature of modern engineering research allows us to address the current and future challenges in manufacturing, healthcare and logistics with our research contributions.

Dan Popa, the director of LARRI, works closely with over 50 team members, including Associate Director Tommy Roussel and LARRI core faculty: Cindy Harnett, Adrian Lauf, Olfa Nasraoui, Karla Welch, Richard Li, Tamer Inanc, John Naber, Christopher Richards, Michael McIntyre, and Kevin Walsh. LARRI faculty have engineering backgrounds ranging from Electrical and Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Applied and Engineering Physics, Computer Science, Civil Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

The LARRI technical staff include research scientist, Sumit Kumar Das, two research engineers, Ji-Tzuoh (George) Lin and Doug Jackson and 8 post-doctoral researchers: Andriy Sherehiy, Alireza Tofangchi, Dilan Ratnayake, Nazita Taghavi, Sri Sukanta Chowdhury, Rohit Uppal, Ruoshi Zhang and Moath Alqatamin. The administrative staff include Johanna Boone, program manager and Laurie Huelsman, administrative specialist.

LARRI currently has more than 30 undergrad and graduate students and more than $20MM in active grant funding. To learn more about the people and projects of LARRI sign up for our newsletters or visit larrilabs.org.
