Scholarships and Awards

The Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department offers its students a variety of Scholarships. Each scholarship has separate requirements and guidelines for students to qualify to apply. Below, you can find details about each of the scholarships offered by the Civil and Environmental Engineering department.

Kentucky Water Resources Research InstituteThe Environmental Protection Scholarship Program is administered through KWRRI and funded by the Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection. The objectives of the program are to promote environmental education at the undergraduate and graduate level in the state universities, and to assist the state’s environmental protection agencies in their effort to hire qualified professional staff.
  • Applicants must be or become enrolled as full-time students in a public university, or college located in Kentucky.
  • Applicants must have completed a minimum of 60 semester hours or met the entrance requirements for a graduate program by their initially funded semester.
  • Applicants must agree by contract to work full-time for the Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection immediately after graduation for six months of employment for each semester of financial aid.
  • Students must maintain full-time status, make normal progress toward their indicated degree, and maintain a satisfactory grade point average leading to graduation.

Kentucky Section Professional Engineers, Louisville ChapterThe Louisville Chapter of the KSPE awards a scholarship to a student who can demonstrate through engineering studies and extra-curricular involvement, that he/she has provided the greatest contribution to the engineering profession while maintaining a commendable GPA.
  • Applicant must be a member of recognized student engineering organization (e.g. KSPE, Tau Beta Pi, Chi Epsilon, ASCE, ASME, IEEE, SWE, etc.). (Please provide membership number)
  • Applicant must currently be enrolled in the J.B. Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville.
  • Applicant must be entering the 4th or 5th year of engineering studies in the Fall Semester of 2018.
  • Applicant must have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) based on 4.0 scale. The GPA will be computed by KSPE based on the official transcript submitted with this application. The transcript must be certified and contain GPA from all engineering degree coursework up to most recently completed semester.
  • Applicant can be a full or part-time student, but must have been enrolled in an engineering program for at least 6 of the preceding semesters, (including summers).
  • Applicant must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Applicants currently receiving NSPE or KSPE Scholarships will not be considered.

Society of American Military EngineersThe Kentuckiana Post S.A.M.E. recognizes that some of our most valuable engineering resources of the future are the students of today. Therefore, the Kentuckiana Post will award up to two (2) $4,000 Scholarships in 2015 to students who exemplify the qualities and accomplishments of a promising engineering career. High school seniors and college students meeting the criteria are encouraged to apply.
  • Must be affiliated with the Kentuckiana Post S.A.M.E. in one of the following ways:
  • Current student member of the Kentuckiana Post S.A.M.E. or Dependent of Kentuckiana Post S.A.M.E. member

Kentucky Transportation CabinetThe Kentucky Transportation Cabinet awards 10-20 new scholarships each year to qualifying students interested in attending the University of Kentucky (UK) or Western Kentucky University (WKU) or University of Louisville (UL) J. B. Speed School of Engineering to obtain a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE).
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited Kentucky high school, or high school graduates who are residents of Kentucky.
  • Must meet the admission requirements of the university and its respective engineering department.

Sam Rangaswamy Scholarship by Structural Engineers Association of Kentucky

The SEAoK is the Structural Engineers Association of Kentucky, a charter member of the National Council of Structural Engineers Association. To encourage the pursuit of excellence in engineering work, and give recognition to special achievement by our fellows, SEAoK is accepting applications to a scholarship award of $2,000.
  • Applicant must currently be enrolled in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Louisville.
  • Applicant must be the 4th (senior) or 5th year (MEng) of engineering studies.
  • Applicant must have earned at least a 2.75 grade point average (GPA) based on 4.0 scale. The GPA will be computed by KSEA based on the official transcript submitted with this application. The transcript must be certified and contain GPA from all engineering degree coursework up to most recently completed semester.
  • Applicant must be a citizen of the United States or permanent resident.
  • Applicants must choose Structural Engineering as his/her speciality.

Association of State Dam Safety OfficialsThe ASDSO Scholarship Program, established in 1992, awards annual undergraduate scholarships of up to $10,000 to U.S. citizens enrolled in accredited programs in engineering or related fields and planning careers related to the design, construction, or operation of dams.
  • Must be a U.S. citizens
  • Undergraduate students planning to graduate in May/December 2020 will be eligible for the 2019 scholarship.
  • Must demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in hydraulics, hydrology or geotechnical disciplines, or in another discipline related to the design, construction and operation of dams.
  • Undergraduate students planning to graduate in May/December 2020 will be eligible for the 2019 scholarship.
  • Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 for the first three years of college and be recommended by their academic advisor.

American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC)The AISC Education Foundation will award more than $138,000 to full-time Juniors, Seniors and Masters students in civil engineering, architectural engineering, construction engineering, construction management and architecture programs within the United States.
  • Applicant must be currently be enrolled in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Louisville during the 2019-20 academic year.
  • Applicant must be a full-time Junior, Senior or Masters-level student at during the academic year.

The Atkins Minorities and Women STEM Scholarship ProgramAtkins Women and Minorities STEM Scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis and recipients are chosen by selection committees made up of Atkins senior professional, management, and human resources staff. Selection is based on academic achievement, personal qualities and strengths, and letters of recommendation and evidence of unmet financial need.Minimum requirements for Fall 2021 are

  • Applicant must be a Junior or Senior
  • Applicant must have a minimum 3.0 GPA,
  • Applicant must be majoring in a STEM related field of study
  • The program is available to female students and students of African-American, Asian, Pacific Island, Native American, Native Alaskan, or Hispanic descent.

American Society of Highway Engineers Derby City Section (ASHE Derby City)The purpose of the academic awards, is to promote the continuing education of University of Louisville Speed School of Engineering upper classmen, in the study of transportation related diplomas, and encourage their involvement in transportation related careers.
  • Applicant must be classified as a junior or senior at the University of Louisville Speed School of Engineering, with an emphasis in Transportation, or other related fields, as approved by the ASHE Derby City Board of Directors.
