Accreditation

The Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering(BSBE) and the Master of Engineering in Bioengineering(Meng BE) programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission(s) of ABET, www.abet.org, under the General Criteria.

The Co-op program is accredited by The American Council for Cooperative Education(ACCE), http://www.co-opaccreditation.org.

The Master of Science in Bioengineering (MSBE) is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, https://sacscoc.org

Mission:

The mission of our Bioengineering programs, which aligns with University of Louisville Mission Statement and J.B. Speed School of Engineering Mission Statement, is to:

“provide students with an excellent education through coursework, research and co-operative work experience to enable successful, innovative, and life-long careers in bioengineering. Graduates of the program will have a mastery of underlying bioengineering sciences and related technologies, as well as professional, ethical, and societal responsibilities.”

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs):

The Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering degree program will generate graduates who:

  1. Are equipped to succeed in a broad range of careers in industry and graduate/professional school,
  2. Demonstrate leadership, communication and team-building skills, and
  3. Comply with professional ethics responsibilities, understand societal issues and engage in life-long learning for continued professional development.

The Master of Engineering in Bioengineering degree program will generate graduates who:

  1. Demonstrate advanced level academic expertise and practical engineering experience necessary to function as bioengineering professionals in a modern, ever-changing world,
  2. Display competency by being selected for employment by industrial, academic or government entities or further professional/graduate studies, and
  3. Understand the broad, social, ethical and professional issues of contemporary engineering practice.

Student Outcomes

The faculty of the Department of Bioengineering actively monitor all aspects of the programs to ensure that the objectives are met and that graduates demonstrate the following outcomes.

B.S. in Bioengineering Student Outcomes:

  1. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics;
  2. an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors;
  3. an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences;
  4. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts;
  5. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives;
  6. an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions; and
  7. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
