Why Professional Class?

Professional Class Computer Requirement

Why does computing class matter?

As a new student preparing for engineering coursework, Speed School requires you to have a professional class machine for a number of reasons.

Professional, also called “Business”, class machines are designed for professionals and organizations that require high performance, reliability, and durability. These machines are typically more expensive but offer several advantages for engineering coursework.

Performance and Power: Within your first year at Speed School you will be required to run high performance engineering software, such as Solid Works. Professional class machines often feature more powerful processors, ample RAM, and dedicated graphics cards. This enhanced hardware allows for efficient handling of resource-intensive engineering software, enabling smooth multitasking and faster computations.

Build Quality: Professional class machines are built with sturdier materials and undergo rigorous testing to ensure durability. They can withstand prolonged usage and frequent transportation, making them suitable for engineering students who may need to work on the go or in demanding environments.

Extended Warranties: With sturdier materials comes longer term warranties. We recommend that every Speed School Student purchase a 4 year warranty for their device to ensure that, if an accident happens, they will immediately have access to a replacement through our loaner laptop program while the machine is out for repairs.

Security and Manageability: Professional class machines often include advanced security features, such as fingerprint sensors, TPM (Trusted Platform Module) chips, and robust encryption options. Additionally, these devices offer enhanced manageability features, ensuring students can remain in compliance of the secure and efficient computing environment provided by UofL.
